Myth: Zionism is an essentially religious movement; the most extreme settlers are pious Jews.

Fact: Zionism is an essentially social movement which has always been controlled by non-religious or less religious Jews. The most religious Orthodox Jews, especially haredim, oppose Zionism and haredim in Israel have managed to extract from the Knesset an exemption from military service.

This is based in the Talmud, e.g. Ketubot 111a.
